Keeping it contained…

Using an unexpected container is a great way of adding personality to a bouquet. Of course traditional vases are beautiful, can be classic and formal but when you use an unexpected container like a tin or box, the look is sometimes more interesting. For this bouquet, I used an old tobacco tin which I love for the bold lettering and highly contrasting colours on it, as well as the fact that I was a gift from a lovely family member 🙂 Inside, I placed a glass vase, in case the metal container wasn’t perfectly sealed (also the neck or opening of the vase would be smaller so would help hold the flowers). A plastic container, glass or big cup could also be used.

For this bouquet, I wanted to make a seasonal arrangement, so I used some branches from fir trees and cedar (again). Although pretty, nice smelling and wintery, at this point the bouquet was lacking visual interest as there were no contrasting shapes.

So, I purchased some foliage and berries from the grocery store, as the simple shape of the leaves would create a nice contrast with the needles of the fir tree and also provide a gentle contrast in colour, being a brighter green.

The addition of berries would provide a seasonal touch, another shape and contrasting colour.

To finish off, I added some little yellow flowers that have a more casual or wild look than bigger, cultivated flowers. At the grocery store, there was a deal if you bought three small packs of flowers, so into the mix I added a third pack, the yellow flowers. Below is the finished arrangement 🙂 which in my opinion, always adds a touch of luxury to a space.

I really like the cut wood slice for the base. It ties it together. And the use of the tobacco tin adds a nice retro look. The advice to use an inner glass vase is helpful as is the idea to buy some extra pieces to add a variety of textures and shapes. Looks great!
